THE BRUTAL KILLING OF CHIEF OGBE ONOKPITE

Chief Ogbe Onokpite, an Urhobo-born-activist, and gubernatorial candidate of Citizens Popular Party (CPP) in the 2007 general elections was brutally murdered by men of the Nigeria Police Force (Delta State Police Command to be specific) on Saturday 26th November 2011.

The Police alleged that the late Onokpite was a gun-runner who was traced to his hotel room at Beeland Hotel, Orhuwhorun Road, Ovwian, in Udu LGA of Delta State purportedly based on the confession of persons who claimed to be his (Onokpite’s) boys and whom were caught with AK-47.

Nothing could be more uncivilised and barbaric than the killing of this upcoming and large-hearted activist who has invested his time, money and other resources towards the pursuit of a better society free of oppression and poverty. To make a bad situation worse, it saddens most of us that he is been branded (in death) by his killers as a common criminal who deserved to die without trial. The State Police Command through the Commissioner (Mr. Ibrahim Tsafe) and the Delta State Government has been issuing conflicting statements day in day out since this open case of murder.

For those of us who grew up in Warri at the same time with the Late Chief Ogbe Onokpite (the late 80s/90s), we could easily tell you that Ogbe was a no-nonsense man. He fights when he sees oppression been meted on even strangers. So, we were not surprised when we saw him in the saddle (even at great risk to his personal safety) trying to emancipate his people politically and otherwise.

That Chief Ogbe Onokpite was cut down by yet to be named police men in a most brutal manner leaves a sour taste in the mouth and the greatest losers in this heinous atrocity is the Urhobos in particular and Delta State in general. Why do I say this?

My personal analysis revealed that Chief Ogbe Onokpite had been the most vociferous political cum social activist of Urhobo extraction under the age of 40 (the age group I belong to) in recent times. He has championed many causes during his short but eventful sojourn on planet earth- he has fought election riggers to a standstill (you can ask the Uvwie LGA PDP what happened at the April polls), spent money on Newspaper adverts, granted fearless interviews on topical and burning issues, incarcerated on trump-up charges, chased around by people who hate the truth, etcetera. He survived these entire onslaughts but he was finally gunned down by people who had the constitutional responsibility to guarantee his right to life. What a pity!

His death should make Deltans (Urhobos in particular) and Nigerians alike to embark on a period of sober reflection. This is so because; he was killed on the mere allegation that he was a gun-runner (even though they met him unarmed in his hotel room). He could have been arrested, tried and when found guilty made to face the full wrath of the law.

Another point worth considering is the fact if the Delta State Police Command had pursued perceived criminal elements with the same momentum they executed chief Ogbe Onokpite our dear state would have been rid of crime which is fast consuming the state. Why single out an armless citizen for such a brutal execution all in the name of fighting crime. Is there something to this death? Is the continuous existence of Chief Ogbe Onokpite a threat to anyone’s ambition? Is anyone uncomfortable with Chief Ogbe Onokpite’s stand on issues? Whatever is the case, time shall tell.

We smell a rat in this mega-drama, hence we insist that the murder of Chief Ogbe Onokpite should be investigated and the perpetrators and their sponsors not matter how highly placed be brought to book.

Deltans (irrespective of ethnic affiliation) must insist on a full scale investigation of this murder otherwise none of us is safe in our own land since those who were supposed to protect us can no longer be trusted. The Urhobos have an adage that says, “when you see the death that killed a man of your age it compels you to think seriously about yourself”. No one can tell who will be next after Chief ogbe Onokpite.

Thank God the matter is already gaining national attention (it should not be treated at the state level because the Late Chief Onokpite and the State Government were not on the same page before his untimely demise) with the tireless efforts of notable lawyers and human rights activists like Oghenejabor Ikimi, Festus Keyamo and a host of others. But the sad thing about it all is that our government seldom act at the right time, they delay action until it has gotten to boiling point.

Nigerians should learn from recent history. The extra-judicial murder of Mohammed Yusuf (the man said to be behind the formation of the dreaded Boko Haram sect) left a big bone in our throat as a nation and we have not been able to swallow nor vomit it (GEJ admitted/lamented recently at a public function that the Boko Haram insurgence is worse than civil war - in my opinion, we failed to act as at when due hence things went out of hand and landed us at this point). Killing more people extra-judicially as has been seen in the case of the brutal killing of Chief Ogbe Onokpite is capable of producing more resentment towards the already unpopular ruling class or government of the day.

An Urhobo Youth Leader, Comrade Blessing Avwata was quoted to have said that they (Urhobo Youth Leaders) have been going round Urhobo kingdoms with a view to calming frayed nerves. My interpretation of calming frayed nerves is that some people are already angry and very ready to explode if something is not done. Government should act fast so that justice can be done or at least seen to have been done. “A word” they say, “is enough for the wise”.

Well, this is not true. It takes hard work and commitment to make even a small part-time living on the internet.

The value of money used to be backed by the amount of gold the issuer had. Then when money was taken off the gold standard, it became represented by paper. The piece of paper in itself had no real value. It was who was printing that piece of paper that mattered. Money became an IOU of sorts.

Now you can sell your products to people worldwide. All they need is an internet connection. Then the postal service collects the goods, and ships them over to you. And I thought with the advent of faxes and emails, the postal services will go out of business. Now they are busier than ever.

So what else can one buy with online marketing ? Digital products are becoming increasingly popular. E-books, computer programmes etc can all be sent through the internet. For a small fee, these companies are able to get surveys to find answers to how their customers feel, what they want and what products they like. They don't have to hire people to do it for them anymore. At a click of a button, they can send the surveys out to many who have registered with them to answer surveys. In the past, someone would have to call each person up and speak to them. As for those answering the surveys, it is really easy money. For a few minutes of their time, at their own leisure, they just click a few answers and the money comes in ! Wonderful concept.

Just a side comment. Trading in stocks and their derivatives have been around for a long time. All this has become so much easier with the internet. Traders no longer need to call up their brokers frantically trying to buy or sell their stocks. That's another way to make money online.
